Summary
Elias and Laia are running for their lives.
After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.
Laia is determined to break into Kauf - the Empire's most secure and dangerous prison - to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars' survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.
But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. Review
Yet another disappointment of this year. Buddy-read this with Vira (aka lost-buddy, Nastassja (aka okay-okay-buddy), Simona (aka turbo-buddy), and Sarah (aka I-know-right buddy) with whom we ranted at nights until our fingers couldn't type anymore. Plus many tanks for dark humor from Gelisvb.
SPOILERS AHEAD
I was right. More books meant more drama. And ATAtN's drama is all about lurve. I had no complaints about the romance in the previous part of the series, but back then I believed that Sabaa Tahir would develop this topic properly. What did I get?
Elias loves Laia. Keenan loves Laia. Laia loves whoever is here and now, Helene loves Elias, Avitas likes Helene, Soul Catcher admires Elias and so fucking on. Ugh.
Laia. I liked her in AEitA and now can't recall why. And it's not her snowflake-ish nature that irritates me s much, it's her inner self, her behavior, thoughts, and actions. She's a whore-ish hypocrite with a lame attitude. The scene when she went off into hysterics and forced a tribe to hide some Scholars made my sooo angry. No one can dictate terms at somebody's 'house'.
Elias. I feel nothing toward him now. He's good, but after:
Laia is curled in a ball on the other, one hand on her armlet, fast asleep. “You are my temple,” I murmur as I kneel beside her. “You are my priest. You are my prayer. You are my release.”I see not a warrior with a heart of gold and desire to fight injustice, but a lovesick boy who fell THAT hard for a pretty face only. Bah.
Keenan. I hate this dude. The big revelation about his nature didn't surprise me at all, everyone who paid attention during AEitA knew it. He's very annoying, has no personality, and actually fell for a pretty face too. I mean... you're an ancient creature who tries to avenge your kin, how can you be so superficial? Also, his ahaha-I'm-not-who-you-thought-I-am was really pathetic. Like a scene from a cartoon.
Helene aka Blood Shrike. Shrike... first of all, this is a very ridiculous word, I can't say it without a laugh. And second of all, shrike is a fluffy bird.
Add some blood and be scared.
Okay, in the last installment I almost hated the girl, but in ATAtN her POV was the only likable thing. She needs to get rid of delusions about Elias and I'll call her my favorite characters in this series. Also, I ship her with Harper... or rather shipped, 'cause the brother things make her future pairing with the guy a bit weird. As if she'll replace one brother with another.
I loved Helene's family (except for Hannah, of course). I still have goosebumps after Chapter 53.
Avitas. The new guy in the town seems cool and now he's my new Elias.
The Commandant. I feared the bitch harrrd in book #1, but in this one, she turned out to be just a crazy lunatic. Why oh why!
This series lacks good villains, you know? Keris and Warden are freaks while Marcus who had a chance to shine in his cunning and cruelty became kinda mad too. Not to mention the Big Bad Boy called Nightbringer who's in love with a shell. Where are reasonable antagonists? What's going on?
Cook. What was that? Celaena Sardothien? If she's so badass then why the fuck she'd been waiting around and didn't kill Keris early? She had A LOT of possibilities. But decided to act only now.
This is as much stupid as Spiro's logic. I wanna give Scholars a chance to fight Empire, I'll tell them my secret. NO! I'll reveal it only to one person and nobody else. Why? So all the second book characters would try to rescue the boy. Thanks, bro. True help.
Izzy aka Plot Tool. Have no idea how she came from a scared shy to a bold flirt so fast. To die happily? Yeah, right.
Soul Catcher reminds me of Zahra from The Forbidden Wish. And she bored me to death with her story and realm. I'm not a fan of spirit worlds and chats with dead people. I roll my eyes every time I see something like that in books.
Mamie Rila is awesome. Smart, honorable, and all. But 2-day-faint is too much, isn't it? Get the woman out of a coma, please.
Augurs. Interesting guys, I wanna learn more of them. Plus their predictions make me curious thus I go on and read till the end.
The writing did change. There are more purple-shit in da style of:
My hands are filled with her—waist, hips, that cloud of sugar-scented hair.and
She made me think of sorrow and a green-gold sweetness.How could one's hair smell like sugar after weeks in the desert? And what the fuck with a green-gold sweetness????
Superpowers. I don't like when at first we have magical creatures and mere people and then these people turned out to be magical too. Elias is a new Soul Catcher, Laia can be invisible, Helene heals with a song, Marcus sees ghosts. Do I need to go on? Too many miracles for one book.
Action. Fighting-scenes were actually good, but I got tired of them at 35% already. The last chapters with Darin's rescue were extremely meh. Everything that could happen DID happen. Laia showed off her power to Warden, Laia fight Warden, Laia this and Laia that. Children rock. Prison Break Fuck Yeah. Unbelievable much.
The ending screwed even the things I liked. Helene became a robot, Avitas pulled Santa-Barbara on, Marcus went crazy, Laia lost Keenan and now loves Elias again. Are you kidding me? My interest is gone and lost forever.
All in all, the book wasn't a total disaster, there were nice things, chill moments, and unexpected turns, but only a few. Everything else killed my joy. I was ready to rant much, but feeling tired even for that.

Очередное разочарование.
С одной стороны эта часть не так и не плоха: были и твисты (пусть даже несколько очевидные), и классные сцены боев, и ряд криповых моментов; но, в целом и общем, «Факел» не удался.
И знаете, в чем косяк?
Элиас любит Лайю, Кинан любит Лайю, Лайя любит всех, кто подвернется, Элен любит Элиаса, Авитасу нравится Элен, а сам Авитас…
Короче, если в прошлой книге претензий к роману не было, потому что автор могла постелить соломки уже в проде, то теперь этот цирк ничем не оправдаешь. Да, в жизни бывают такие же сантабарбары, но проблема не в геометрии, а в спотолочных шипах. Решила Тахир замутить любовную кучу-малу? И замутила. А логики никакой.
Лайя в «Факеле» столь феерично тупа и мэрисьюшна, что симпатия к этой деве сдохла довольно быстро. Дочь-Львицы бегает со своим уставом по чужим монастырям и прокачивается до Зены-Королевы-Воинов, не ударив пальца о палец. В голове у нее ветер, а волосы пахнут сахаром (Элиас так говорит, но я ему что-то не верю).
Элиас тоже испортился.
Лайя спит, подложив под голову руку с браслетом.Вот так славный воин с благородными идеалами стал самым обычным влюбленным, бросившим все ради волос с сахаром (я еще не раз это припомню). В этой книге его то и дело тюкают, бьют, режут, травят, давят, бросают, и в какой-то момент это попросту надоедает.
— Ты мой храм, — шепчу я, опускаясь перед ней на колени. — Моя жрица. Моя молитва. Моя свобода.
Кинан. Внимательно читавшие «Уголек» в курсе секретов рыжего; все остальные, может быть, удивятся. Бесячий парень, пускающий слюни на Лайю, голосующий за секс после похорон и обожающий мультяшные каминауты.
ПОВ Элен оказался наиболее интересным. Скандалы, интриги, расследования!
Единственное… Сорокопуты они же…
Такие вот милые птички. И каждый раз при виде слов «Кровавый Сорокопут», я мысленно поливала кровью эту пушистую крошку.
А еще родня у Элен классная. За исключением Ханны. Самый околослезный момент был связан именно с родом Аквилла.
Авитас. Новый парень на деревне. Активно шиплю с Элен.
Керис. Раньше боялась эту тварину, а теперь пригляделась — по ней психбольница плачет. Сумасшедшая фанатичка, ей богу. Такие меня не пугают, а только смешат.
И вообще, что за фигня с антагонистами? Керис и Уорден двинутые. Маркус был вах, а потом тоже сошел с ума. Несущий Ночь похож на эмо из девяностых (или когда-то там они были?). Дайте кого-нибудь злого и адекватного!
Повариха из первой части превратилась в местную Селейну Сардотин. У меня к ней один вопрос: зачем было ждать у моря погода в течение стольких лет? Почему она не пришила Керис гораздо раньше?
У Спиро тоже с логикой не ахти. Решил спасти бедненьких книжников и рассказал страшный секрет… всем? Как же. Всего одному парню, которого тут же схватили и как бы... спасибо за помощь. Но я понимаю, научи Спиро не только Дарина своим премудростям, книги бы просто не было, потому что пленник лишился бы всякой ценности.
Умилила Иззи: в мгновение ока из затюканной и зашуганной превратилась в кокетку от бога. Слабо верится в такие трансформации.
Собирательница Душ напоминает Зару из «Запретного желания», а еще вгоняет в такую тоску, что мама не горюй. Мне вообще не нравятся всякие потусторонние миры, по которым бегают души. Выглядит карикатурно.
Мама Рила крута. Надеюсь, ее откачают. А то Саба Тахир вырубила беднягу и сказала, что та очнется дня через два, забыв, что это уже не отключка, а натуральная кома.
Пророки весьма интересные хлопцы. К тому же их предсказания (хотя бы они!) держат в напряжении до финала.
Стиль письма изменился, кстати. В очень слащавую сторону: волосы с ароматом… сахара (вы помните чьи), золотисто-зеленая сладость (и это не фрукт, а… Лайя), запах специй и дождя (а это у нас Элиас). И все бы ничего, но там никто не моется, все куда-то бегут, проходят месяцы… может, потому сладость зеленая? Плесенью успела покрыться.
Сверхспособности у ВСЕХ. Одна становится невидимой, другая лечит песней, третий души ловит, четвертый призраков слышит, пятый сам того и так далее. Когда в книге и так имеется мистический элемент (ифриты, джинны и ко), зачем раздавать суперпауэры людям? Слишком много чудес на квадратный метр.
Финал практически пролистала: бессмысленная беготня и езда на роялях (тех, что стояли в кустах). Случилось все, что могло случиться. 53 глава выше всяких похвал, но побег из курятника... скука смертная.
А еще мне не понравилось, к чему мы в итоге пришли. Элен, к которой я начала проникаться симпатией, включила режим робота. Авитас — режим мыльной оперы. А Марскус — режим психа. И мой интерес сдох.
Третью книгу не жду от слова совсем (что говорить о четвертой), но почитать почитаю. Вдруг Маркус подлечит свою головушку?
ПС: В благодарностях Саба шлет поцелуи одной писательской подруженьке за помощь и всё такое. И знаете, кто эта фея? Рене Ахди. Это многое объясняет...
