Summary

If you could steal things from dreams, what would you take?

Ronan Lynch has secrets. Some he keeps from others. Some he keeps from himself.

One secret: Ronan can bring things out of his dreams.

And sometimes he's not the only one who wants those things.

Ronan is one of the raven boys—a group of friends, practically brothers, searching for a dead king named Glendower, who they think is hidden somewhere in the hills by their elite private school, Aglionby Academy. The path to Glendower has long lived as an undercurrent beneath town. But now, like Ronan's secrets, it is beginning to rise to the surface—changing everything in its wake.

Review
“Are you crying?"
"Only a little."
"Why?"
"Generalized sadness.”
I'm scared. It's been two books only and my love for the characters is already overwhelming, it grew so big I can feel its edges cutting me from inside, 'cause I'm not enough to contain it. Sinking feeling, teary eyes, crazy mind. Yes, that's me. If not for my dear friends (Nastassja, Vera, and Julia) I might be worse. So thank you guys for your support and our endless chats. The art below illustrates not only the guys we love but us too.

“In that moment, Blue Kate was a little in love with all of them.
Their magic. Their quest. Their awfulness and strangeness.
Her raven boys girls.”
The Dream Thieves continues the story of its predecessor, it has many POVs but focuses more on Ronan, his family, problems, and secrets. Especially secrets. Maggie said that this series had started a long time ago with Lynch family only and Ronan's plot-line, so reading The Raven Boys' sequel is like peeking into the past, fiddle with a mechanism, touching one's heart.

Do you remember how The Raven Boys ended?
“I guess now would be a good time to tell you,” he said. “I took Chainsaw out of my dreams.”
Yes, Ronan's able to bring random things from his dreams into real life. He's got this ability from his late father, as well as, I quote, molten eyes and a smile made for war. Having such a gift means attracting many problems and a lot of dangers. Like treasure hunters (hello the Gray Man and Co), reckless teens (hello Joseph Kavinsky), or your own fears in a form of scary creatures (hello birdlike monsters).

I've found Ronan's story very creative, magical, with a scent of creepiness and a tank of potential. Plus Ronan himself is a good example of a complicated hero. You may disagree with some of his actions, but you can't resist his dark charisma and your fingers would be unwillingly (or not so) crossed for every crazy initiative of his. I can't tell much about his family and issues without spoiling crucial things, but I'm sure you'd be amazed by some moments.

Aside from exploring Ronan's inner world, racing with him at nights, and poetically swearing, we would go on with Glendower-search, Adam's ambitions, Gansey's restlessness, Noah's afterlife, Blue's longing, 300 Fox Way's family's beautiful chaos, and stuff. Everyone will show you another side of his or her personality or let to dig further into their minds. There would be times for crying, for getting angry or be irritated, or just shutting up and thinking. Maggie's writing won't leave you a chance no to connect with her characters. I was shocked by my twisted love for Kavinsky or sympathy for Mr. Gray, but what could I do? Stiefvater's magic and all that jazz.

Okay, I've already mentioned new heroes not once but twice, and all without an explanation who they are, or who they fucking are, if speaking Ronan.

Meet Joseph Kavinsky
“He was infamous, even at her school. You wanted something to get you through your exams, he had it. You wanted a fake license, he could get it. You wanted something to hurt you, he was it.”
If you were attentive while reading the first book, you'd remember that Lynch sometimes racing with this kid. He's kinda obsessed with Ronan and it's hard no to surrender to his anticharm. Kavinsky's life, I quote again, is just drugs, sex, and cars. And a sparkle named Ronan, of course. Dirty jokes, poisonous attitude, mad actions. All for Ronan's attention. He gave up on a normal life, gave up on himself, but he's desperate for Ronan's approval and more.

The other newcomer is the Gray Man.
“I know how to punch a man’s nose into his brain.”
“What a coincidence,” the Gray Man said genially. “So do I.”
A hitman with a cruel sibling and strong principles, who came to the town chasing mysterious artifact the Greywaren. He's going to be surprised. And he's going to fall in love. This man is clever and skilled, he thinks over everything and just then acts. It's hard to say whether I liked him or not... he's gray after all, and my feelings are just the same.

Now let's get back to the story. Expect consequences after Adam's bargain with Cabeswater, someone's first kiss, a body to bury, and cars to burn. As to romance... ah, well, it's so subtle I wanna scream. Blue says that she tries not to think about kisses, 'cause not to dwell on things you won't have is a better way to handle your type of poverty (it's not always about money) and I try no to dwell on her feeling for Gansey and his for her or else I'd die from anticipation mixed up with frustration. These two would share a few very emotional moments, not hot, but electric. I really try not to dwell, but can I have more?

The ending is cliffhanger-ish. Though I was impressed not with it, but with pre-ending, or rather pre-pre-ending. When the story will reach the point I'm talking about, you would know. That was powerful, bitter, and soooo sad. No way it could go another way, but still.

In sum, this book would teach you the difference between candles and stars, it would give you a taste of not-anymores and nevers, of desire to be alive and to feel alive, of secretly swinging that way (YES).

Now imagine that you can dream to reality. And mind that nightmares are dreams too.
