Summary

Princess Eadlyn has grown up hearing endless stories about how her mother and father met. Twenty years ago, America Singer entered the Selection and won the heart of Prince Maxon — and they lived happily ever after. Eadlyn has always found their fairy-tale story romantic, but she has no interest in trying to repeat it. If it were up to her, she'd put off marriage for as long as possible.

But a princess's life is never entirely her own, and Eadlyn can't escape her very own Selection — no matter how fervently she protests.

Eadlyn doesn't expect her story to end in romance. But as the competition begins, one entry may just capture Eadlyn's heart, showing her all the possibilities that lie in front of her... and proving that finding her own happily ever after isn't as impossible as she's always thought.

Review

35 boys and 1 girl

I was thinking about this combination since The Selection, but it seemed unreal, ‘cause… what kind of man would run to a contest for a consort-role? Even if somebody would…

The Heir had failed that “if”.

What I expected from this book? Fast pace and humor. But, sadly, I didn’t even smile let alone laugh. Let me tell you how much fun I had... MC was waking up, choosing an outfit, thinking about her coolness, acting stupid, acting stupid again, and going to bed. I was waiting for some intrigues, epic love, and hormonal rampage, but got just a polar explorer’s diary.

Characters were flat and empty. The plot was ridiculous: besides the dull Selection, nothing was happening at all. The political situation was WTF-ish. They had annihilated castes and were hoping for good (doing nothing along with that). How about the elimination of your stupid absolute monarchy?

So...

Maxon and America have four children, their firstborns are twins Eadlyn and Aeren. The girl was born seven minutes early, so her parents did change the low for Eadlyn to be the next ruler. I have one question: WHY? She doesn't wanna be queen! Okay, she does. But she’s eager for power and crown not for a real job and dealing with the country’s problems, she wants glamour, parties, and people's admiration. Her brothers (yep, Maxerica has three sons and just one daughter), on the other hand… they could be nice kings, but noooo, Eadlyn-Shmidlyn is Maxon and America's choice.

Lucy and Aspen haven’t children, Marlee and I-Forgot-His-Name have two: Josie (yobbo-chick) and Kile (who at the start is represented like a sloppy Joe and after a while like a god of kisses).

What else… old news: rebels are gone, but rebellion's still there, as the palace and even Gavril.

The Selection Boys aren't developed at all, except for a Finnish-boy-with-curls and Kile. The first is funny, the second is everywhere (willy-nilly you are getting used to him). The rest? The uninterested crowd.

Eadlyn acts like a 13,5-year-old, although she’s 18. Her head is full of silly notions, clothes, heels, hairstyles, and, of course, herself. Eadlyn repeats that she’s the most powerful girl in the world, who’s afraid of nothing and knows everything.

How Maxon and America could raise such a spoiled, silly, and toffee-nosed child? Seems like Maxon’s parents had not a healthy atmosphere in their family but they were able to grow a decent son while Maxon and America, who both are good persons, weren't.

So, people, do you know for what sake this Selection was started? To entertain people! They would watch TV and stop murmur against the monarchy. Seriously? Illea’s nation isn't very smart, is it? TV-show solves the problem of unemployment and castes’ echoes as well. Nice.

Of course, Eadlyn doesn't wanna any fiancés, she wanna die a virgin with a crown on top of her stupid head. But at the end of this book, she would change her unbearable mind. That’s it.

PS: I know there will be another book in this series and I hope Kiera would stop her unstoppable Selection work after that.
